Do All the Legs of a Coffee Table Have to Sit on an Area Rug?

An area rug provides visual interest and defines a space within a room. A coffee table placed near a couch and chairs establishes this space as a sitting area. Ideally, the area rug should be bigger than the coffee table, and all four coffee table legs should fit onto the area rug, with the same amount of rug on all sides of the coffee table. Cantilevered

If you are comfortable with asymmetrical and unusually balanced furniture such as a cantilevered coffee table, all of the legs or base of the table may not need to be on the area rug. Hanging the base or two legs of a cantilevered coffee table off an area rug may enhance the visual effect of the cantilevered design. A thin area rug should be used in this case so the coffee table does not rock.

Geometric Shapes

Consider using four small geometrically shaped area rugs that can fit beneath the coffee table. You can design the space so a small rug can go underneath each leg, or arrange them beneath the coffee table so that it is not necessary to have any legs at all on the area rugs. The advantage to the latter idea is that you can mix and match rugs, swapping them out without having to move the coffee table.

Pedestal

Decorate your sitting area with an area rug and a pedestal coffee table. This prevents the table from rocking on an uneven surface by placing the coffee table's pedestal base squarely in the middle of the area rug. Make sure that the pedestal base is wide enough to support the coffee table to prevent it from tipping over as guests sit down and get up.

Hanging

Eliminate the four-legged coffee table problem by hanging your coffee table on decorative chains from the ceiling. This dramatic decor not only highlights the coffee table, but also the objects displayed on it and the area rug beneath it. It provides a clear focal point for the room and defines the sitting and socializing area, while also acting as an objet d'art. A hanging coffee table also prevents indentations on a valuable area rug.
