A brick pedestal is a pedestal made out of bricks or brick veneer, and is a popular decorative element in the Craftsman style of home architecture. Craftsman style was most prevalent from 1900 to 1930, but many such homes from that period still stand today. The brick pedestals were used to hold up wood columns that held up porches and the front part of the house. You can make a brick pedestal for a wood column with little trouble or expense. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
- 1
Dig out a shallow, 2-inch deep trench where you want to place the pedestal or column. If you do not want to place the pedestal onto the ground, then you can use mortar to hold the pedestal in place. Check that the area is completely even using the level. Mark the size of your chosen pedestal size with chalk if you are not digging a trench.
2Mix the mortar with water to achieve a mud-like consistency. Spread a -inch thick layer of mortar into the marked area or soil. Press a square of bricks laid end to end around the perimeter of the pedestal outline. Check that the bricks are even by using the level.
3Spread another -inch thick layer of mortar over the top of the bricks. Press another layer of bricks around the first layer. Stagger the placement of the bricks so that the seams do not line up. Continue to add bricks until the pedestal is as high as you want it.
4Apply one final layer of mortar over the last row of bricks. Place a large stepping stone over the top of the bricks to make the top part of the pedestal. Allow the mortar to dry for 24 hours. Once the mortar is dry, you can add the wood part of the column over the brick pedestal. Use mortar to hold the bottom of the column in place on top of the pedestal.
