How to Convert Standard English to Metric

How to Convert Standard English to Metric

The standard system of measurement throughout most of the world is the metric system. Thus, you will often need to convert from the English system, also known as the U.S. system, to the metric system. The metric system bases measurements on factors of 10; however, the English system requires conversion factors that are more complex. These conversion factors are different for all units of length, area, volume, mass and temperature. The National Institute of Standards and Technology provides reliable conversion tables.

Instructions

    1

Use the conversion table to identify the appropriate conversion factor to convert the English unit to metric.

    2

Multiply the value of the English unit by the conversion factor with a calculator to obtain the value of the metric unit.

    3

Convert one unit at a time for measurements containing more than one unit -- for example, density -- and for which no conversion factor exists. You will need a different conversion factor for each unit.
