How to Convert Volume to Weight for Cooking

How to Convert Volume to Weight for Cooking

Cooking ingredients can be measured by weight, volume, or number of items. Although the most common method of cooking measurement is metric weight, North America and Australia measure by volume. This means that when an international recipe is used, conversion of the quantity of ingredients will be necessary. While this is a relatively simple process, a conversion chart will be needed because each ingredient has its own weight according to volume. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

    1

Download and print a kitchen conversion chart from a website such as allrecipes.com, netmums.com, or Betty Crocker.

    2

Locate the item to be converted from the conversion chart.

    3

Multiply the number of volume units by the weight equivalent to obtain the converted measurement.

    For example : 1 cup white sugar = 7 ounces. 2 cups of white sugar = 2 x 7 oz. = 14 oz.

    1 cup white flour = 4 1/2 ounces. 3 cups of flour = 3 x 4 1/2 oz. = 13 1/2 oz.
