How to Measure Table Units

How to Measure Table Units

The United States is one of only a handful of nations to have not adopted the metric system of measurement since it was introduced by the French in 1799. As long as the U.S. measures by its imperial system, users must adapt feet and inches into decimals applied by the powers of 10, 100 and 1000. Actually, metrics extend further, but average measurements negate the use of such massive numbers (science excepted). One centimeter may be equal to 10 mm, but how many inches? With manual or online calculation, you can navigate the International System of Units. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Calculate the imperial measurement according to units of length (inches or feet), area (square inches or square feet) or volume (cubic inches or feet).

    2

Select the applicable metric unit of measurement according to area, speed, temperature, distance, time, length, height, volume, liquids, power or weight. Your selection will determine which metric unit represents each category. Check "Online Metric Converter" for more information.

    3

Multiply the sum of your imperial measurement by your selected metric unit of measure. Example: 1 yard = 0.91 meters; 5 yards x 0.91 = 4.55 meters.

    4

Multiply your metric unit by its smaller constituent measure if necessary. One meter equals 100 cm. In our five-yard example: 4.55 meters x 100 cm = 455 cm. Five yards equals 455 cm.
